American Composers Orchestra
American Composers Orchestra (ACO) centers composers in all that it does. Activities focus on creating, performing, and promoting orchestral music by American composers.
Concerts & Composer to Composer Conversations - Orchestra lovers and new music enthusiasts alike will find chances to discover new artists and works through ACO’s virtual and in-person concerts and Composer to Composer conversations, which feature composers speaking about their works and leading creative lives.
American Composers Orchestra (ACO) continues its series of Composer to Composer Talks, which features major American composers in conversation with each other about their work and leading a creative life. The intergenerational discussions will begin by exploring a single work with one composer interviewing the other. Attendees will gain insight to each work’s genesis, sound, influence on the American orchestral canon, and be invited to ask questions of the artists.
For this installment, Jonathan Bailey Holland talks with Alvin Singleton about his work BluesKonzert, a triple commission from 1995 by the Detroit, Houston, and Kansas City symphony orchestras. The talk will be hosted by ACO’s Artistic Director Derek Bermel, live-streamed and available to watch for seven days after the event.
Of BluesKonzert, Michael Fleming writes in the program note, “Vernacular and classical traditions have often cross-pollinated in American music, both in performance and composition. A case in point is BluesKonzert, which mixes musical bloodlines as neatly as its title does language. Konzert is a German term that can mean either ‘concert,’ as in a musical program, or ‘concerto,’ as in a work for solo instrument and orchestra. Singleton, who trained in both classical music and jazz, is perfectly positioned to exploit such ambiguities and crossovers.”
EarShot Readings & Professional Development Webinar - Emerging and aspiring composers are invited to online professional development webinars, and should keep their eyes open for open calls to apply for EarShot Readings and fellowships across the country.
YouTube - ACO’s YouTube channel is a virtual treasure trove of short concerts, composer portrait interviews, professional development webinars, and instructional clips for middle and high school students.

Ashland Symphony Orchestra
The Ashland Symphony Orchestra presented a virtual encore of Symphony No.9, op.95 E minor, also known as From the New World, by Antonín Dvoŕák, on, April 18. Recordings can be found on the symphony’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.
Originally performed on September 28, 2019 under the baton of guest conductor Peter Stafford Wilson, it included live visual accompaniment by Adrian Wyard. Wyard has edited this performance video to include images of the orchestra as well as his glorious landscape imagery from all across America. The visuals simply depict a journey across the country with each movement centered on a broad theme. For the first movement the theme is water, the second features the desert night sky, the third introduces animals and spring flowers, and the final movement tours majestic mountains through the seasons and concludes our journey across The New World. The orchestra was recorded live in concert at the Robert M. & Janet L. Archer Auditorium. Executive Director Martha Buckner says, “The addition of visuals timed to the performance was new for the orchestra as well as the audience. This spring, we have had to cancel performances as well as travel. Many people are using music as a way to pass the time and lift their spirits. What a joy to be able to take a virtual trip across the country while listening to the orchestra, the jewel of Ashland County. Please consider this our gift to you.”

Evansville Philharmonic Orchestra
We are excited to be back to in-person concerts and have added Livestream available for each concert. We found non-traditional ways musicians can share their music. The EPO’s musicians have joined the #SongsofComfort project, inspired by Yo-Yo Ma, with weekly performances on social media. We are also performing within the community with small ensembles to share live music socially distanced to small audiences of 25 or less. We hope our performances remind the community that we are here, that we care about them, and that we hope to offer some feelings of peace and comfort.
